Giulio Occhini – 1936 – 2019


On November 17, Giulio Occhini passed away. He was one of the founding fathers of computer science in Italy and in Europe. Thanks to his unique vision and commitment, in 1995 and 1996, the European Computer Driving License was created, which in the last 20 years has spread digital skills and raised awareness of their importance for all citizens Italy and far beyond.

Having graduated in Physics at the University of Milano, since 1960 he held technical and managerial positions in several areas in industry: from research and development to product planning, and from application development to marketing.

All the while, Giulio maintained a close relationship with the academic world. He was Professor of Information Systems at the University of Pavia, and cooperated with SDA Bocconi and MIP (Politecnico di Milano).

Giulio was President of CEPIS from 1995 to 1997, at the time when the ECDL programme was being finalised and introduced in Europe. He was also a Board Member of ECDL Foundation and participated in the Quality Assurance Committee. He was President of AICA (the Italian Computer Society) from 1989 to 1991 and from 2001 to 2003, then CEO till 2016.

Giulio has left us all a great legacy with his humanity and kindness. Our commitment is to continue on its path.
